Nature and You Lecture: The Sunflowers of Yolo County

Every summer the fields around Yolo County explode with huge quantities of beautiful yellow sunflowers.  In fact, they are a tourist attraction as well as a significant contributor to Yolo county’s ag economy.  But why are they here? What are they used for?  Where do they come from? What are some of their unique qualities?  How are they grown?  Are they all the same?

Please join plant researcher and sunflower expert Glen Cole at the Woodland Public Library 6PM Thursday, June 27, for a free lecture to learn the answers to these questions and more.  Glen has a long history with sunflowers in Yolo county and has worked to develop new sunflower varieties.  As a plant breeder he integrated genetics coming from the wild species endemic to North America, and even more particularly plants collected in the hills of Yolo, Colusa and Glenn counties.

The Woodland Public Library is at 250 First Street Woodland, CA 95695 and the lecture will be held in the Leake Room (enter from the parking lot on the North Side of the library).
